Novelty of dining al fresco in a medieval borgo with that sense of 19th C. Ostia Antica just outside the wall.

Review of the Bistrot Piazza Ravenna, Piazza Ravenna 7, 00119 Ostia Antica Seated at a table outside Il Bistrot in the Piazza Ravenna you need to close your ears to the sound of the traffic on the Viale dei Romagnole - in the modern town - that you can see 50 m away through the smaller of the two gateways in the ancient, fortified wall in front of you. Remind yourself that you’re in Ostia Antica’s borgo (i.e. medieval village) and, with a little imagination, you can make believe that you’re in a time warp >400 years ago*. You can see where the description is heading … the Piazza Ravenna – from which Il Bistrot takes its name - provides a glimpse of those traditional images of an ancient hilltop town somewhere in the hidden depths of the Abruzzi Mountains in Central Italy. There are, perhaps, half-dozen restaurants located within the borgo or just outside and adjacent to the one remaining protective wall that once encircled the entire community. Il Bistrot is the largest of the three eating places in the small piazza. Il Bistrot’s tables/chairs/umbrellas dominate, but there remains an easy walking route through from the gateway into the centre of the borgo. Il Bistrot occupies the building on the west of the piazza – counter, stairways, toilet, inside dining, cooking/kitchen, etc. Around the corner (and outside the piazza) there’s a service entrance into the rear of the restaurant. We ate at Il Bistrot twice during July – one time with family and the second time with a friend who lives in the borgo and a couple of her friends. We also had a long-time acquaintance from a neighbouring table also came across to say ‘hello’. Therein is the real pleasure of having lived nella comunità italiana locale una volta e conoscendo alcune persone. The two of us ordered much the same foods each time – spaghetti alle vongole for the one and pizza for the second - both of which were fine quality foods, a delight to eat and good value. We paid E16 for the vongole and a few euro more for the pizza (prices varied with the different toppings). That’s one of the paradoxes of la cucina italiana … there are so many popular dishes from which to choose but, typically, a handful of favourites tend to dominate personal choice. The borgo is unique in this quartiere of Rome – a medieval/pedestrian atmosphere dominates. There were a dozen diners the first time we were there and, perhaps, twice as many the second time. Service was prompt and the cameriera spoke English with us when ordering (and this notwithstanding there we are trying to improve our Italian). She smiled when we said as much. The piazza is sheltered and, for the most part of the year, tables/chairs from the bistro spill out across the open space – next to the passageway alongside one side of the piazza. Seasonal rain always happens, of course, and that means sometimes shifting and eating inside a building that dates from the establishment of the town in the Middle Ages. The restaurant’s toilets are inside too. Make sure you explore the place – once inside take the narrow stairs below ground and imagine that you really have travelled back in time. The place can be quiet too - motorized traffic is not allowed inside the borgo. Dusk-into-evening is the best time to capture the historical atmosphere of the borgo, piazza and Il Bistrot. The shadows lengthen and creep across the fabric of the buildings, the narrow passageways become lost, the piazza darkens and the tables become islands of light. The early 20th C. streetlights mounted high on the surrounding buildings stretch into the distance with people disappearing and re-appearing as they walk past. What you see in the borgo today are the remains/reconstruction of the medieval community that developed during the mid-15th C. within a protected area of about one hectare. There’s the single wall to the north, castle/fortifications to the west, the Church of Sant’Aurea to the south and, to the east, a line of houses that have replaced the east wall over a period of >300 years. Before eating at Il Bistrot, take time to wander the borgo and gain that sense of history that envelops you. If you’re eating in the evening you will need to move quickly before darkness hides the streets/buildings and limits those magic historical images of times past. Tell yourself, however, you’re in a living museum – you are.** Il Bistrot remains a popular favourite – one we’ve been coming to for >15 years. We look forward to returning again soon. Peter Steele 30Nov25 *Well, don’t look that closely at your immediate surroundings – set into the wall of the bank just inside the borgo is a modern ATM. **Ostia Antica is E1.50 Metro ride from Central Rome. Explore the borgo and complete your day with a meal at Il Bistrot Piazza Ravenna.

Tiny historic bistro with excellent fresh Italian food. Not touristy, yay!

Fabulous little bistro in a quiet pedestrian square ( within the old fortifications). Right by an ATM, just off the main street. Sat outside taking in the atmosphere. Excellent ( fresh, vibrant) bruschetta, delicious home made lasagna. Owner was very helpful.

Ottima location, raccolta e confortevole.

Visit to Ostia Antica

It is a fantastic place in a wonderful ancient town inside a Roman times castle. The food and the experience is outstanding thanks to Michelangelo. His knowledge of the surroundings made our dinner an unforgettable one. This place is a must to visit ...in Ostia Antica.

Ristorantino

Lascio a chi legge ....
